Letter from Sophia Nielsen, a Willowbrook camper

We received this beautiful letter from 15 year-old Sophia this summer; and wonderfully for us, she said we could post this on the web site.

My most poignant memory from my childhood years at Willowbrook was my role in Newsies. I remember being outfitted in my costume and glowing from the attention of having my makeup done. I was ushered backstage the moment before I was to run onstage with other little girls like me and grab newspapers. We whispered and giggled, anxious for our big moment. Someone waved us onstage, and the other girls scampered on. I however, suddenly noticed that my shoe was untied, and I bent down to fix it. Realizing the other girls had gone on without me, I panicked and ran out. Although I was late on my cue and interrupted a scene, I remember the character handing out the “papers” was very kind, and improvised to cover my mistake.

All my young years (seven overall) at Willowbrook followed a similar pattern. I felt welcome in the free environment, able to go where I wished and be independent, yet always aware that someone would be there for me if I needed help.

As I became older, I began focusing my time in the Fine Arts tent. I remember ooh-ing and ah-ing at the talents of the apprentices. I never thought that I would be admired the same way, but working at Willowbrook in the Fine Arts tent last summer after the recommendation of Ilene, I was. Children would gather around me to talk, watch me paint, and wait for opportunities to contribute in a small way to my art.

It is because of this that I wish to work again in the Fine Arts tent. My artistry lies in the fine arts, and it is there that I can gather the oohs and ahs that I hope will inspire people younger than me to pursue art the way I was inspired when I was their age.

Sophia Nielsen
